Stuart Wilson Trophy

Round 9 results:

James Hiller 1 Joshua Morris 0

Tony Morris 1 Peter Hiller 0

Andrew Robinson 0 Andrew Mather 1

Round 11 results:

Warren Mayocchi 1 John Ryland 0

Martin Laizans 0 Marcus Porter 1

At the top of the table, Andrew Mather came out a pawn up at the end of the opening, capitalising on a few misjudged moves early in the game which could have led to even worse consequences.

With black pressing, white castled into a knight fork, a terrible error which led to the game being effectively over.

Marcus also won in just 10 moves after Martin blundered in the opening and was gone before 8:30pm. This win sets up a showdown next week that is likely to determine the outright tournament winner.

Against John, Warren improved his chances of claiming the Maiden Trophy with a win against John in an even game.

Tony Morris is probably the only player remaining with an outside chance of catching him, and he remained in the hunt with a win against Peter.

Joshua Morris had a game to forget where the roll of the dice (if such a thing exists in a chess game) went against him at every turn. James Hiller was the lucky recipient of this good fortune, in the form of a full queen advantage. Then a strange turn of events occurred. James offered Joshua a draw, despite being a queen up. And then Joshua declined the offer, which may be a first in chess, when in such a perilous position. James went on to win the game, reaching such an overwhelming position but still unsure of how to proceed until Joshua resigned. This victory saw James win his first classic rated game with the white pieces at our club, after 61 previous attempts (4 draws, 57 losses) spanning back to August 2000.
