Before games commenced, a discussion occurred around the black cards handed out at the Olympic badminton.

Players were warned not to ‘tank’ tonight, but it appears the warning fell on deaf ears, at least on one board!

Martin had already resigned within five minutes of the start of his game against Greg which went:

1. e4 d6; 2. d4 Nf6; 3. Ng5 Nxe4; 4. Qe2 Nxg5 white resigns 0-1.

Greg felt the resignation was a little premature, but Martin is a staunch advocate of resigning a position once he is a ‘figure’ down.

Andrew and Brian played out a very complicated game which witnessed attacking play from both sides, but particularly from Brian with white. In the end Brian was several pawns up and had the winning chances, but Andrew had to play very accurately to force a draw, with a pawn on the verge of queendom forced Brian to embark on repetition to achieve a draw.

Tony and Jim played out an interesting game, and the only one on the night which featured castling!
