Despite the wild storm that caused much damage to property and infrastructure in The Gap on Sunday 16 November 2008, and left much of The Gap without electrical power until the following Thursday, the club was still open for business tonight.

Reports on games: (by Nathan Shaw)

Peter and Mark: When I walked over Peter was playing right to the death with a heavy material disadvantage, but both players immediately commented after the game that it was a very wild and enjoyable game early on before Mark got the decisive advantage.

Mine against Ray: Ray was white and we played the Benoni defence (no idea of the variation). I felt like Ray was slowly pushing towards a much better position when (and this is really the only reason I am reporting the game!) I spotted a nice combination. The position was:

W: Kg1, a3, b2, e3, f2, g2, h2, Be2, Knd4, Rc2, Qa5

B: Kg8, a6, b5, d5, f7, g7, h7, Kng5, Bb7, Rd8, Qd6

Play continued:

1. Rc7; Rc8

2. RxB??; Rc1+

3. Bf1; Nh3+

4. gxN; Qg6+ and mate next move

Against Peter: I played an aggressive opening looking for an early pawn attack on his king, but Peter came up with a great attack down my own exposed kingside before I could get mine off the ground. Unfortunately for Peter, when he had done all the good work he gave away a piece and most of his attacking chances and the game eventually ground down.
