Report – 12 December 2003

45 minute tournament

There were many upset results on a night that saw Ray Adams draw all three of his games coming in as a late entry. His first game was against Andrew who paid the price of not concentrating in the early stages and going a bishop down for no return. He struggled on and then Ray swapped a bishop for two pawns to gain some open play against Andrew’s queenside castled king. Andrew forgot that he was now equal on pieces and sacrificed a rook to gain the initiative. Thanks to the time factor he actually forced Ray to sacrifice a rook to save mate (position: W Kb2 Qf5 Rf7 Nb3 d4 e3 f4; B Ke7 Qb4 Rg7 Rg8 Bd7 a7 b7 c6 d5 – Andrew played Rh7+, Rgg7, Qe5+). Following this Ray gained the initiative checking Andrew’s king around the board so that he gave up a knight. Then Ray had to lose his bishop to avoid a draw, which eventually it was anyway on repetition.

In Ray’s next game, Brian achieved a stalemate when Ray grabbed Brian’s last rook in haste. Ray’s final draw with Debbie was a more straightforward affair with both players looking for an opening when there wasn’t any with rook+pawn each. Andrew was materially down but had a positional advantage against Brian. However he had to be careful to avoid a mate to his exposed king. In the end Brian managed a repetition against the open king with his two rooks.

All of the Group B games went to plan until the final game of the night. George could have gained a draw early on but decided to head for a better result. In the end he couldn’t stop Peter’s pawn advantage. If Peter can win his remaining game against John Curran he will be at least equal first in his group and with tied groups decided by lot anything is possible!

The tournament is unofficial in that it will not be rated or be part of Best All-Rounder Trophy calculation for 2003 or 2004. The tournament will run for the rest of 2003 and overlap with the 2004 lightning tournament (ends Feb 20, 2004).

Quote of the night:

“12th of the 12th. It’s a bit like the 11th of the 11th, but..” G Flitcroft-Smith musing on tonight’s date in one of his more Hilleresque moments.
